Kilkerran Single Malt Whisky is produced in the Glengyle Distillery, re-opened in 2004 after originally operating from 1872-1925, Mitchell’s Glengyle is under the ownership of Mr Hedley Wright, chairman of Springbank Distillery and descendant of Glengyle’s founder William Mitchell.
The distillery has been producing its Kilkerran Single Malt since March 25th 2004 and has bottled a series of releases under the Work In Progress label over the past number of years.
Kilkerran 12yo has been matured in a marriage of bourbon (70%) and sherry (30%) casks and is bottled at 46% ABV.
Like the Work In Progress series - and all releases from Glengyle’s sister distillery Springbank - the whisky has not been chill-filtered and no caramel colouring has been added.
The whisky is double distilled in the traditional Scottish style and is produced from lightly-peated malt at around 12-15ppm.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: oak notes are dominant, followed by toasted marshmallows and dried fruit pudding, as well as cherries, marzipan and a hint of peat.
Palate: initially fruity with citrus notes and orange peel, after this: vanilla, butterscotch, honeycomb and digestive biscuits can all be tasted and enjoyed.
Finish: velvet and smooth with lemon meringue, to conclude, there’s an oiliness and a saltiness that you’d expect from a Campbeltown dram.
