Hazelburn, 12YO Sherry Cask (700ml)
Hazelburn, 12YO Triple Distilled Campbeltown Single Malt
Released in August 2009 and limited to 3900 bottles, Hazelburn 12YO is named after one of the long defunct Campbeltown distilleries (as is Springbank's heavily peated expression, 'Longrow').
This whisky displays none of the subtle peatiness evident in the Hazelburn 8 year old, a whisky which tends to pick up some residual peat flavours from the Springbank and Longrow spirit runs, despite itself being labeled 'unpeated' - something of a paradox in the world of Scotch whisky that tends to cause a degree of confusion!
The 12 year old is triple distilled, matured in ex-Sherry casks and bottled non chill filtered.
NOSE : Incredibly rich, the influence of the sherry casks is immediately apparent. Sweet and chocolatey, there are also notes of apricot, orange marmalade, almonds and marzipan.
PALATE : Malty, fruity and elegant. A very well balanced and rounded dram with hints of oak, figs and nuts.
FINISH : A long, lingering fruity sweetness.
