The Old Malt Cask, Croftengea 12yo Single Malt (700ml)
Hunter Laing, The Old Malt Cask
Croftengea 12yo Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distilled at the Loch Lomond distillery in 2006, this single malt whisky is made from heavily peated barley and is an elusive dram because of very limited expressions of the spirit.
This single cask release from the Old Malt Cask series was matured for 12 years in a refill hogshead, and bottled at 50%, flavours of vanilla custard and fruit salad, it becomes sweet with cinder toffee (crunchie bars) and pineapple. The smoke comes through on the palate and finish, lingering long and peaty.
Nose: Vanilla custard with fruit salad, honey.
Palate: Cinder toffee, pineapple, sea salt.
Finish: Long and lingering, with a hint of peat smoke.
On Hunter Laing & Co.
Stuart Laing, son of famous whisky independent bottler Douglas F. Laing established Hunter Laing & Co. after nearly 50 years in the whisky industry, breaking away from his brother Fred who remains the owner of the Douglas Laing Company.
Hunter Laing are best known for their Old Malt Cask, Douglas of Drumlanrig and Old and Rare series, all of which are sourced from single casks from distilleries all around Scotland.
The Old Malt Cask series are bottled at what is referred to as 'the golden strength' of 50% ABV, a strength that founder Stuart Laing believes offers the best qualities of higher proof bottlings, while giving their whiskies 'drinkability'.
